We are proud to release a new, special limited-edition print by Jacco Olivier, taken from his recent animation Current. The work, available in an edition of 20, shows a sea turtle swimming slowly toward the light, moving against the stream. It is both a poetic image and a powerful symbol.
The title Current has two meanings. It refers to the ocean current that the turtle swims against, and also to the word “current” as in “the present”.
This double meaning links the work to urgent questions of today. Sea turtles are among the animals most threatened by climate change. At the same time, the turtle also carries a poetic and human meaning: swimming against the flow, yet still drawn toward the light, is something we all recognise.
The limited-edition print of Current is released as part of Olivier’s exhibition Point Nemo at Galerie Ron Mandos. Point Nemo is the most remote spot in the ocean, far from any land. For Olivier, it represents a place of isolation but also of imagination, a point that makes us think of where we are and what horizon we move toward.
In this context, the turtle of Current fits seamlessly. It embodies both struggle and hope, moving forward even when the path is difficult. Olivier’s works often shift between painting and film: each image is built layer by layer, photographed, and transformed into a moving animation. This process brings stillness and movement together, much like the sea turtle itself, anchored in the present, yet always in motion.
